Here's my latest finished knitting project - a pair of socks which I knitted with yarn that I dyed myself - with Kool Aid. They still smell a little fruity.
Very cool. I remember my friend Ingrid used to dye her hair with kool aid when she went to camp as a kid. She said it was sticky. The socks look great. They make me want to learn to knit something other than a rectangle!
We used the unsweetened Kool Aid, so it wasn't sticky. I understand you can get some nice results with cake frosting dyes, and they come in more interesting colors. It's all just basically food coloring, but it stays in the wool really well. Socks are fun to make, but working with double pointed needles is tricky. I'm getting used to it, but I make lots of mistakes, and I often have to use bad words.
Those are cute. There was a gal in my little quilt group who had a baby and she got into all this natural stuff for her baby. She ended up hand-knitting a bunch of "diaper covers" to use instead of plastic pants, and she used Kool Aid to dye the yarn for those. We thought she was a bit over the top for hand knitting something that the baby was going to poop in, but the Kool Aid dying was kind of neat.
Kathy - you inspired me to start my own pair of socks this week. I have about 5" of the 6" top done already (with JUST a few mistakes), and I can't wait to get the last inch done, so I can start on the tough parts. I'm using the same philosophy as I did on the mittens. I'm just toughing it through all the mistakes, and will learn from them, and then the second pair I make will be perfect! Or maybe the second SOCK I make will be perfect!

Hmmm. Kool Aid. Bet Izzy would really like a sock ball made out of these socks!
ReplyDeleteI really need help gettimg started on my pair of socks. I have started them several times, but gave up after the first few rows.
